12:00 pm - About me.
I was born in 1975. My parents were teens when I was born, high school sweethearts, and yes, they're still together. I grew up in rough little suburb way south of Seattle, oldest of three. My whole family still lives in the area; I moved to Dallas at the end of 2006. I'm female, although I get mistaken as male online a lot because I often err on the side of logic (and guns, and motorcycles, and dogs, and fast cars, etc., etc.). There is no mistaking me as male in person.

When I started this journal in 2001, I was a registered Democrat who thought health care was a right, guns jumped up and killed people of their own accord because they were inherently evil, that whatever the government said was true and right, and I trusted the media. I was an atheist and believed in monogamy (thought I just hadn't found the right person, yet), I worked hard at my day job and thought that was all I had to do to get ahead.

These days (ca. 2008), I identify as a polyamorous gun-toting agnostic libertarian survivalist nut. I'm still bisexual, though. Probably more than I was back then.

I'm not married. I'm in love with someone who can'thas decided he wants to be with me (yay!). I have no children, but I want some, maybe. Depending on my mood when you ask me. I have a really good job and I'm learning how to save money and trying to develop the skills needed to qualify for an official Survivalist Nut Frequent Shopper card. I have a dog whom I love even when he infuriates me, and a gun, a car, and a motorcycle. I like where I live. I have good friends, and I make more from time to time. I'm mostly happy.

I write about a lot of stuff in my journal. Daily trivialities, deep philosophical thoughts, pet peeves, sexual kinks, remembrances, and random links. New friends are welcome, and no hard feelings if you decide you don't dig it and drop me later.

12:44 pm - Stupid appliances
Why doesn't anyone manufacture a refrigerator that is wide and shallow so that you can actually get to the things in the fridge? Wouldn't it make an immense amount of sense for the fridge to be the same depth as a standard kitchen cabinet, and, say, twice as wide? Would make kitchen design a lot easier, too.

ETA: Whoa. I'm not the only one who thinks so!

10:01 am - More movies
Predator. I had somehow missed seeing this movie before and it was the best movie I watched all weekend despite several plot weaknesses. The utter coolness of the alien/monster/thing made up for the points that were duuurrrrrrr.

Jesse Ventura's chin is, like, whoa. What is that on his face?! Oh, it's his chin! He and Ahnold have both improved in looks with age, I think.

And Bill made a beef stew because he was craving it and it was utterly awesome and I ate two bowls despite the heat and I gained 1.5lbs this weekend. I'm going to be all week trying to get that back off, just to break even this week. I'm sensing a trend. Bill cooks... September gets fat. September cooks... Bill is very very happy but ultimately unsatisfied with the volume or saltiness (namely, the lack thereof) of the food.
Hmmmm.

I say again, we need a housewife.

One who likes movies like The Thomas Crowne Affair (Bill's fav), GATTACA (mine), and Predator (both).

While I find the expression "gayby boom" eye-roll inducing - maybe even verging on offensive - I completely agree with Jesse Levey. If Republicans want to support family values, they should support so-called gay marriage.

4:22 pm - movies
Brokeback Mountain.

They weren't gay, they were just in love with each other.

What a depressing movie.

ETA: If I ever find myself in the position of watching this movie again, I think it would be interesting to count the number of cups of coffee that are poured and never drunk.

11:46 am - Solaris
Some people were interested in my impressions of the Russian version of this movie.

Organ music. Interesting.

Ooh, plants. One of the striking things about the American version of this movie is that it's always gray, always sterile, always lifeless... a depressing version of the future. (Same with GATTACA, now that I think about it.)

I am fascinated by language and have never had the opportunity to listen to uninterrupted Russian before so the compulsion to notice common sounds is irresistible and distracting.

I'm amazed at how similar in flavor the two movies are.

I really like this part:
Kelvin: See, I love you. But love is a feeling we can experience but never explain. One can explain the concept. You love that which you can lose: Yourself, a woman, a homeland. Until today, love was simply unattainable to mankind, to the Earth. Do you understand me, Snaut? There are so few of us. A few billion alogether. A handful! Maybe we're here in order to experience people as a reason for love.

******************
All in all, I liked the American version much better. The Russian version tried very hard to be profound but it's hard to remember what profound is when you're bored out of your wits.

7:40 pm - Well damn
I'm glad I logged in to Everyday Minerals today to order makeup, because I stumbled over news in their forums that they're doing a site redesign and when they do, they're discontinuing their Super Custom Kit (12 full-size products and/or brushes of your choice for $50). If you've tried their free samples and loved it like I do, this might be the time to buy because their new site is supposed to launch on 7/5.

This stuff lasts such a long time. I bought some new eye colors for fun, but mostly stocked up on stuff I am using every day. I figure I've got about two years of makeup for $50. Plus they give free gifts with purchase, and of course a free custom sample kit with each order. :)

I made this! It's lipsticky/gloss stuff. Isn't it pretty?
2009-06-27 13.13.23.jpg

ETA: No, I haven't suddenly concocted a chemical lab in my front room. I shouldn't say I made it, I should say I mixed it, from various kitchen-witch stuff I had around the house, and mixed mineral hue colors and sparkles to get what I wanted. It could stand to be a little thicker - it's almost a sheer - but I really, really like it, and it smells and tastes like honey and beeswax and lemon. Nom nom nom.

The camera makes it look more orange than it is. It's more red/berry. That said, I'm really pleased with this new camera, for a cameraphone!

8:55 pm - Movies again
The Others. Another movie I find strangely compelling for no apparent reason except that Nichole Kidman is particularly enticing when she's in distress... but I do sometimes love the idea of light in a house being like water on a ship, that must be kept at bay with doors and curtains.

10:04 am - on fashion
There's a women's fashion magazine in the break room that's entirely dedicated to "recession chic" bargains. The styles for the year are so diverse and complicated - not at all versatile (meaning lots of patterns that shouldn't be mixed, lots of different fabric textures that don't complement each other, lots of cuts that are completely unforgiving) and that seems to me to be the exact opposite of bargains. If you can only buy two pairs of shoes this year, are you going to buy a pair of mid-height plain black pumps and a pair of leather flats, or are you going to buy a stacked-heel
houndstooth-patterned brown and yellow wedge with a ribbon tie around the ankle and a pair of jelly ballet shoes with rhinestone accents? Come on. You can only buy two bottoms to wear to work. Are you going to buy a tailored black skirt and a pair of nuetral-colored slacks or are you going to buy a polka-dotted black and white bubble skirt and a deep ochre flower-embroidered sari wrap?

And let's not even talk about how their "steals" for shoes start at $368...

It's like there is this whole culture out there (out there - ha! I'm living right smack in the middle of it) that is so disconnected from reality that they think that a fashionable pair of shoes that you can only wear with ONE skirt and that cost $368 are a STEAL. Their idea of a recession is buying a Prius as a status symbol and foregoing the annual cost-of-living raises for "the help". And the part about this that really rubs me wrong (all of it, but ok) is that these people don't consider themselves unusual in any way. At least I *know* that some of my beliefs and lifestyle preferences are far removed from most peoples' realities...

$368. Jesus, that's a car payment. Not for these people, though, probably.

Today I'm wearing one of the most expensive blouses I've ever bought. It's red satin in a very flattering, almost timeless cut, with a collar and double buttons, in fingernail-polish red. I bought it on clearance for $29 (that's a lot, in my book). I'm wearing a brand-new knee-length black skirt that I bought on clearance at Avenue week before last for $9.96. I'm wearing really awesome naughty-librarian type shoes with a 4" heel, that [info]dartpoly gave me when I helped her move, because she never wore them and they were almost new and we wear the same size. And I'm wearing my $7 plastic red lipstick. And I feel (and, I think, look) like a million bucks.

I love the Pet Shop Boys. I cannot hold still in my chair while I'm listening to them.

9:50 am - Writer's Block: Conversion Rate

Have you ever considered converting to another religion?

View other answers

Yes. When I was a teenager, I tried to become a christian, but my suspension of disbelief wasn't strong enough, and I quickly realised that it wasn't the religion part that attracted me as much as it was the community part (and I've been looking for that, ever since... hello, intarnetz!).

As an adult, I recently converted from atheism to technical agnosticism, but the difference is nominal.

1:08 pm - Public poll
Interesting discussion with a friend led to this question.

I maintain that sexual exhibitionism is a violation of the Zero Aggression Principle (also sometimes called the Non-Aggression Principle, so maybe you've heard of the NAP if not the ZAP) because you're bringing another person (the unsuspecting witness) into your sexual experience without his or her permission.

Friend maintains that it is not a violation of the ZAP because you are not touching the other person, and, if I'm representing his viewpoint correctly, you're only bringing the idea of that person into your sexual experience.

I suspect Friend might also invoke the "you don't have a right not to be offended" clause, and I do agree with that.

And if I were playing Devil's Advocate against myself, I would also say that this is akin to people telling me they thought about me while masturbating, which I kind of love to hear. *blush*

But then to retort to that, I would say that, by Friend's definitions, a pedophile masturbating at a playground full of kids isn't enacting Aggression, either.

1:50 pm - musings
I used to sit and eat Red Hots all afternoon. It improves my concentration greatly to have something fidgety to do while I type/think/work, but was the sugar giving me even worse brain fog? I haven't been able to find anything healthy to chew on while I work. Instead I pause every 2-3 minutes and pick at my fingernails like an OCD freak. But my concentration is improving muchly.

I'm not 100% sugar free now (I do sugar on rare/special occasions) but my brain is so much more engaged. I feel positively lucid. I... was going to type that I didn't even know I was living underwater, but then I remembered making posts in the past about constantly feeling like my brain was wrapped in a blanket. Muffled. From sugar? Whodathunkit?

This is an awful idea.
I am not a fan of gender stereotyping anywhere, but particularly not in utero.

""When a parent can visualize the sex of their baby and confirm they have that little person inside of them, it suddenly becomes real to them,' said Jennifer Parks, co-director of Loyola University Chicago's Programs in Health Care Ethics. 'They often feel a stronger connection. So, it's not surprising parents would want this test.'"

By "visualizing the sex of their baby", I think what she means is "begin visualizing pigtails and dolls, or overalls and footballs". But maybe I'm just cynical. My poor [potential] kids. I don't like pink or blue. Their nurseries, if ever I have nurseries or kids, will be green or purple or yellow. Maybe even white.

There's a bill in the Texas House today (SB730) that would force employers to allow employees to keep guns in their cars that are parked on employer property while they're at work.

I'm so torn on where to stand on this.

On the one hand, yes! I *should* be allowed to keep a gun in my car (or in my purse, or my pocket, for that matter). Self-defense is a human right!

On the other hand, I think leaving a gun in the car is STUPID! They get stolen! And then you've put a gun in the hands of a criminal!

On the other hand, there shouldn't be a law against being stupid.

On the other hand, people (including employers) have the right to decide what they do and don't want going on on their private property.

On the other hand, it's pretty much a fact of life that most everybody has to work for a living and is going to be parking their car on that private property. (But does that make it right, to violate one person's rights in support of another's? Argh!)

On the other hand, if I don't like my employer's policies, I am free to seek employment elsewhere.

How many hands is that?!

11:47 am - Brownies!
The brownies, by the way, turned out awesome.

Here is the recipe if you're interested. They're not vegan, because they have eggs and butter, but they are flourless and sugarless, low on the glycemic index, and extremely chocolately. Bill says next time he'd try using sweetened instead of unsweetened baking chocolate, or maybe half and half, because they are definitely a dark chocolate flavour, but I like that.

The only thing I'd change from the recipe is that I wouldn't bother pre-heating the oven until you're done with the food processor step. It took me awhile to get everything together and the oven was on for a good 40 minutes longer than it needed to be. I also used a 9x12 glass baking dish with no parchment paper (sprayed with canola oil) and cooked them for 50 minutes at 325F.

Photos are from the recipe website, not mine.

Um... yes. That would be because you're bigots. Just like the people who were opposed to racial integration during the civil rights movements of the 1950s and 1960s.

Using "that's how I was raised, so that's what I believe" as an excuse for your bigotry doesn't fly past age 15 or so.

This morning my company implemented emergency preparedness plans so that effective COB today, they can send us all to work from home at a moment's notice, due to swine flu. Shared this with Bill, who informed me that at least two more local school districts have closed their schools completely until at least May 8th. Wtf? Do these people know something I don't?? Or are they just buying in to the media frenzy?!

THEN I go to weigh myself prior to our weight manager's meeting (down 3.2 lbs this week, wtf?!) and when I come back down the hall, they've got the cleaning staff spraying disinfectants in the halls! It smells awful! It's far more likely to send me home sick than the flu itself!

Jesus god, people. Get a grip. Wash your hands, it'll make you feel better!

Two little words that will ruin your whole day:

CHECK ENGINE

ETA: I <3 the intarnetz. I googled "my car smells like rotten eggs". One site recommends an "Italian tuneup" -- change your air filter, fill to the brim with premium, take her out, spin her up, and and blow the cobwebs out -- anybody up for a road trip? Honey? Lunch in Oklahoma Saturday, maybe? Another site says to clean the fuel injectors. I should also check my alternator for proper charging; it could be melting my battery, causing a sulfur leak. I'm pretty sure this smell is from the exhaust, though, from the catalytic converter, which means I'm probably running too rich (or driving too hard for distances too short, or, most likely, both). Which means a computer repair or replacement. Which means $$$. Fuuuuuuuuuck me.

10:23 am - Places to go four-wheeling and off-roading?
Ok, this might seem like a weird question, but here goes:
background )

Are there any places, within a one to two hour drive of the north Dallas-type area, to go off-roading, four-wheeling, trail-breaking, hill-climbing, what-have-you?

And does anyone know of any area groups, forums, etc. that I could hook up with to talk more about this?

3:59 pm - 6 CDs
My car came with a six-disc in-dash player. I'm afraid that four of the slots have become permanently occupied by a mix CD Bill made for me before we met, Sarah McLachlan Fumbling Toward Ecstasy, Pink Floyd Dark Side of the Moon, and The Cranberries Everybody Else is Doing It, leaving me only two slots for rotation.

I need some new music. It doesn't have to be new, just new to me.

Suggest something? Keep in mind that the idea is that it be mellow and NOT make me want to kill somebody while I'm stuck in traffic with idiots and maniacs. I have plenty of Metallica and NIN and TOOL for my headphones and my computer and my office. For the car, I need mellow, melodic, singalong stuff. To give you an idea, here are some of the albums that frequently rotate in those final two slots. )

You know what's sad? The *newest* album on this list is like six years old.

I just googled "making ice cream with agave nectar". I found what I was looking for, but I'm off to the kitchen to make agave nectar margaritas because, well, because.

5:14 pm - Oh darling LJ braintrust...
I have a couple of frames I want to put mirrors in. How much should I expect such a thing to cost? Where would I go to have such a thing done? With the rectangular frames, I'm sure I can order online, but the oval will be a more difficult fit - I think I should have it done in person. The oval is about 20" by 16" and I just want a thin, light mirror... has anyone ever had this done? Any advice appreciated.
